The Unfolding Cabinet

Wine Cabinet
Maple, Walnut, Zebra Wood
This cabinet explores the layered nature of communication within East Asian intergenerational relationships.
Constructed with three different woods across the doors and drawers, the piece reflects how meaning shifts between the speaker, the words themselves, and the receiver.
The drawers remain partially visible when the cabinet is closed, yet cannot be opened until the doors are first moved aside — a gesture that mirrors the process of understanding emotionally indirect language.
Growing up, many expressions from her father felt distant or difficult to interpret. A simple phrase such as “Is the weather good?” often carried an unspoken meaning beneath it: thinking of you.
Through physical layers, obstruction, and gradual access, the cabinet becomes a meditation on translation, emotional distance, and quiet forms of care.
