The 7–10 Chair

2025
Maple, Upholstery

Named after the “7–10 split” in bowling, a famously difficult formation to clear.

This lounge chair reflects the emotional distance and controlling forms of protection often found within East Asian intergenerational relationships.

The chair is formed through the crossing of two identical leg structures. Though sharing the same shape, the two sides differ in scale, color, and surface treatment, representing the similarities between parent and child while revealing the imbalance embedded within that relationship.

The larger black structure rests above the lighter form, suggesting both authority and a kind of protective control. Etched onto the lighter side are childhood doodles drawn by the artist — traces of uninhibited imagination and early self-expression that were unknowingly preserved for years by her father. Though separated, the two forms remain physically intertwined, holding care, dependence, tension, and distance at the same time.
