The Monkey Chair
2025
Dining Chair
Walnut, Red Oak, Leather
This chair explores the tension between bodily instinct and social ideas of proper posture.
Designed for the habit of sitting cross-legged, curled up, or slightly off-center, the piece challenges the expectation that a chair should discipline the body into one “correct” position.
Its playful structure, banana-like details, and tail-inspired form reference the word “monkey” not as something childish, but as a way of honoring an intuitive, unfiltered way of inhabiting space.
Rather than asking the sitter to behave, the chair adapts to them. It creates room for comfort, restlessness, and small acts of rebellion within an everyday object.
Through humor, ergonomics, and familiar animal imagery, The Monkey Chair becomes a celebration of the body’s natural impulses — a chair for sitting the way one actually wants to sit.
